Operation & Maintenance and Renovation & Modernization

Conference 2023

Theme: Uplifting life span of thermal power plants | Organised by: Council of Enviro Excellence

About the Conference:

The primary objective of this virtual conference is to offer a knowledge sharing platform where highly skilled thermal power plant professionals will discuss cost reduction strategies in operating and maintaining coal based power plants. Additionally, the conference will focus on scope and area of renovation and modernisation, assessment techniques for turbines, boilers and generators, data interpretation and also discuss value-added case studies by industry experts/personnels.

Operation & Maintenance:

Increasing uses of proactive maintenance practices & techniques:

Improved Operation & Maintenance (O&M) practices coupled with required renovation & modernisation (R&M) interventions have huge potential for increasing the efficiency and longevity of thermal power plants.

Strategic and cost effective power plant maintenance is the way forward, which is gradually settling in Indian thermal power plants. Maintenance of power plants can be predictive, preventive or planned. Predictive maintenance cuts down the maintenance cost as compared to that incurred in preventive maintenance, as it prevents excess wear and tear of the operating equipment. Planned maintenance is a routine or time based maintenance that consists of lubricants, oil change, bearing checkup and other such parameters. Power plants that go for proactive maintenance lead to better results and performance in the future. To achieve this, they can adapt maintenance tools & techniques, softwares and applications within the industry.

SCADA and CMMS applications for power plant maintenance:

A power plant’s hassle free operation is required for the continuous delivery of electricity to consumers. In order to make this up and running as a routine, plant maintenance contractors and operators play an important role in sorting out any operational issues post commissioning of the maintenance. They need to follow the standard industry-leading maintenance procedures and practices, as well as rely on technologies such as Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) to perform regular maintenance activities. SCADA enables the monitoring of plant operations and machinery conditions, while CMMS helps in planning maintenance activities in advance.

CMMS is also used to track the performance of power plant equipment and components. This technology can also detect faults and identify underperforming assets and at the same time prompt maintenance activities accordingly.

Renovation & modernisation (R&M) /life extension (LE) and Uprating (U)

Renovation and modernization of thermal power plants is aimed at improving their safety, energy
efficiency and environmental performance, thus reducing the chances of inefficiencies,
irregularities and frequent breakdowns.
As per CEA (Central Electricity Authority), Activity of Thermal Project Renovation &
Modernisation Division

Challenges and the way forward

R&M of thermal power plants plays a critical role in restoring lost power plant capacity and reducing coal consumption, and is one of the most cost-effective options to achieve additional generation in a very short period.

Despite numerous benefits, the pace of implementation of R&M in the country has been slow.

The assessment of the R&M market shows that there is a huge potential in India, but due to low market visibility, the R&M market continues to witness a variety of challenges and issues that have impeded growth and scale-up plans. However, a positive action plan could strengthen the interest of R&M stakeholders.

Earlier the R&M needs for meeting the environmental norms included upgradation of ESP. However, stringent New environmental norms regarding Particulate matter PM, SO , NOx, Mercury and Water consumption for thermal 2 Power Stations. The TPPs may be required to take measures like, augmenting ESP to meet the particulate matter norms, installing Flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) for meeting the new SO norms, carrying out 2 combustion optimization/modification/DeNOx retrofit at their units to meet the NOx norms.

Opportunities

Huge R&M potential, as 60% of coal-based thermal power plants in India are more than 20 years old.

Shortage of fuel and increasing costs has also led to movement toward more efficient use of existing resources.

Incentives and enforcement mechanisms to be designed to ensure implementation of R&M projects on a timely basis.
